Facebook Fingered in Google Smear Campaign

Information technology looks like Facebook is in the center of another Porto Rico solecism–a Facebook spokesman has confirmed to The Daily Beast that Facebook has been participating in a "smear campaign" against Google.

Yes, information technology's incisively what it sounds like. Accordant to The Day-to-day Beast report by Dan Lyons Facebook hired PR firm Burson-Marsteller to "pitch anti-Google stories to newspapers, urgency them to investigate claims that Google was invasive the great unwashe's privacy."

Jim Goldman

Alas, for both Facebook and Burson, the plan totally backfired: Burson inclined the story to blogger Christopher Soghoian, and suggested he'd be fit to sell it to publications like The Washington Post and Political leader. Soghoian non only when turned down the whir, he published the email exchange online.

To attain things worse, Burson also pitched the account to United States of America Today, who upturned around and promulgated a piece on Burson's "whisper" run.

The pitch reportedly had something to do with an "obscure Google Gmail feature" called Social Mexican valium. Burson claimed that Social Circle desecrated the privacy of millions of Americans, but USA Today looked into the feature and set up that Social Circle actually allows Gmail users to make social connections using public information.

USA Today revealed this data about the service to the pitcher–in their display case, former CNBC anchor Jim Goldman, who recently joined Burson–who promptly declined USA Today's requests for comment.

Now, both Soghoian and USA Today realized something important–Burson wasn't lurch this anti-Google story of its possess accord, but information technology was working for an unsuspected client. Nobody was sure who the customer was, until now: Facebook.

A Facebook spokesman confirmed this fact to The Unit of time Beast Wednesday night. Facebook cited two reasons for hiring Burson to pitching opposing-Google stories: (1) information technology believes Google is doing sketchy things that intrude on people's secrecy (pot, foregather kettle hole), and (2) it is kind of irritated that Google is using Facebook information to it.

After each, Google's Elite group Circle uses unrestricted information to make connections–and some of that "public info" is pulled from Facebook.
